JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A powerful earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia on Thursday, sending residents fleeing from swaying homes and hospitals, authorities and witnesses said. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 7, triggered a tsunami warning but the alert was quickly lifted after it became clear no destructive waves had been generated, the country’s geophysics agency said. (more…)

KASHIWAZAKI — An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 rocked a wide area centering on Niigata Prefecture on Monday morning, killing nine elderly people, injuring more than 900 people while causing a blaze at a nuclear plant, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency and a Kyodo News tally. TOKYO (Reuters) - A strong earthquake jolted northwestern Japan on Monday, injuring dozens of people, destroying some houses and causing a fire at a nuclear power plant, Japanese media and officials said. “I was on the street, and there was strong sideways shaking. I couldn’t remain standing. One wall has collapsed,” gasoline station worker Hiroki Takahashi told NHK in Kashiwazaki City, near the focus of the quake, where TV broadcasters said at least 12 people where trapped under collapsed houses. Tsunamis 20 inches tall hit some coastal regions
A strong earthquake jolted northwestern Japan on Monday morning and caused buildings in the capital Tokyo to sway. The Meteorological Agency said small tsunamis as high as 20 inches were believed to have hit coasts in the area. (more…)

MEXICO CITY: A magnitude-6.1 earthquake shook southern Mexico and was felt as far away as the capital, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Duty officer Chen Shenhzao said the earthquake struck Chiapasstate at 8.09 p.m. local time (0109 GMT).
Some Mexico City buildings shook, causing some residents to run out of their homes.

BEIJING — A strong earthquake shook southwestern China’s Yunnan province early Sunday, killing at least three, injuring hundreds and forcing the evacuation of 120,000 people, state media reported.

The 6.4-magnitude quake struck at 5:34 a.m. and was centered in an old part of the historic city of Pu’er, in Ning’er County, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2. (more…)
