ISLAMABAD: Senator Prof. Khuirshid Ahmad has alleged that the government has been failed to mobilize all its resources to meet the calamities in the country.He was participating in debate in Senate on flood situation. He criticized the government government for its lack of preparedness and failure to mobilize resources to meet the calamity. He said that on the basis of estimates available so far over 325 people have been killed and 225 still missing. Over 70,000 houses have been destroyed or very seriously damaged in Baluchistan, Sindh and NWFP.
This has rendered over 2.5 million people homeless. It is reported that over 80,000 people remain still stranded and without any shelter, he added. He expressed that over 5000 kilometer of roads including coastal highway has been seriously damaged in Baluchistan. Its four sea ports have also suffered major damage.
Similarly, he went on agriculture crops on over two hundred thirty thousand hectors has been destroyed. Over 20% of schools have been damaged in Baluchistan and 10 percent in Sindh. This is a national calamity and it is only through mobilization of all resources at national and international level that proper relief and rehabilitation work can be done.
Professor astonished the failure of Government’s different agencies, particularly the Crisis Management Authority to learn any lesson from Oct 05 earthquake and was still not prepared to face a national disaster. He expressed his horror on the total absence of any contribution from the so-called National Volunteers Corp established with so much fanfair after the October earthquake.
He demanded that immediate efforts should be made to provide relief and rehabilitation to those affected. Equally important is the need for preparing a plan to restructure and reconstruct of water reservoirs, road works, sewerage, water supply arrangements; education and health care units to face such challenge in the future. He also demanded mobilization on war footings to face the challenges because the people have been suffering for the last two months and it is feared that the total loss in money will be to the tune of approximately 100 billion rupees.
He appealed to the Federal, Provincial and the local Governments to mobilize resources for relief and rehabilitation and also appeased to the philanthropists and volunteer agencies to play their role in meeting this national calamity.
